So you want to become a tattoo artist. Maybe you've been drawing since you could hold a pencil. Maybe you've spent countless hours studying the work of your favorite artists, imagining what it would feel like to create something permanent on someone's skin. Whatever brought you here, you're in the right place.
Breaking into the tattoo industry isn't easy. With approximately 50 tattoo studios in Omaha and high competition for apprenticeship spots, finding the right opportunity can feel overwhelming. Most shops only have one or two openings at any given time, and many aspiring artists spend months: or even years: searching for the right mentor.
At Farnam Street Tattoo, we created our six-month apprenticeship program to give dedicated artists a clear, structured path into this industry. Here's everything you need to know about what we offer and how it can help you launch your career.
Why a Professional Apprenticeship Matters
Tattooing isn't something you can learn from YouTube tutorials or weekend workshops. It's a skilled trade that requires hands-on training under experienced professionals. A quality apprenticeship gives you:
Real-world experience working in a licensed, professional environment
One-on-one mentorship from artists who have mastered their craft
Proper technique that protects both you and your future clients
Industry connections that can open doors throughout your career
The tattoo industry has deep roots in mentorship. For generations, artists have passed down their knowledge to the next wave of creators. When you apprentice at a reputable shop, you're not just learning technical skills: you're becoming part of a tradition.

What Our Six-Month Program Covers
Our apprenticeship is designed to transform you from an aspiring artist into a confident, capable tattoo professional. Over the course of six months, you'll receive comprehensive training in every aspect of the craft.

Color is one of the most powerful tools in a tattoo artist's arsenal. You'll master:
How colors interact and complement each other
Selecting palettes that age well over time
Working with different skin tones
Creating depth and dimension through strategic color placement
We're proud to use Nikko Hurtado's Revolution Ink in our shop: one of the most respected ink lines in the industry. You'll learn to work with premium materials from day one.

Client safety is non-negotiable. This portion of your training covers:
Proper sanitation protocols and cross-contamination prevention

Talent alone won't build a successful career. We also teach you:
How to consult with clients professionally

What's Included in Your $6,500 Investment
We believe in setting our apprentices up for success. Your tuition covers everything you need to start your career:
Complete tool kit with professional-grade equipment
Tattoo machine ready for professional use
Quality ink supplies including Revolution Ink products
Required certifications for Nebraska licensing
Six months of hands-on training with experienced mentors
Practice materials for developing your skills safely
When you break it down, this investment includes not just education but the actual equipment you'll use to launch your career. Many apprentices at other shops spend months: sometimes years: working for free while purchasing their own supplies. Our program gives you a clear timeline and everything you need in one package.

Nebraska Licensing Requirements
Before you can legally tattoo in Nebraska, you'll need to obtain your Body Art License from the Nebraska Department of Health. Here's what the state requires:
Age requirement: You must be 18 years or older
Education: High school diploma or GED
Bloodborne Pathogen Training: Complete an OSHA-approved course (minimum 2 hours)
First Aid Certification: American Red Cross First Aid Training
Photo identification: Valid driver's license or passport
Application submission: Complete the state licensing application
Our apprenticeship program helps you navigate these requirements and ensures you have the certifications you need upon completion. You won't have to figure out the licensing maze on your own.
